{"id":76,"date":"2017-03-10T15:16:41","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T19:16:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/?p=76"},"modified":"2017-03-10T15:24:08","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T19:24:08","slug":"time-to-move-to-kicad-eda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/?p=76","title":{"rendered":"Time To Move To KiCad EDA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Eagle_vs_KiCad.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Eagle_vs_KiCad-300x80.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Eagle_vs_KiCad-300x80.png 300w, https:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Eagle_vs_KiCad-500x133.png 500w, https:\/\/notebook.chaopricha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Eagle_vs_KiCad.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I just found out recently that AutoDesk just bought CadSoft Eagle &#8212; my favorite PCB layout software. \u00a0I have built many boards and libraries using Eagle starting from version 4 all the way to version 7.7. \u00a0Now I just found that CadSoft Eagle is no more. \u00a0AutoDesk owns Eagle now and they have a subscription only purchase model. \u00a0This is terrible in my opinion since you used to be able to just pay once and own the software. \u00a0Now this try-and-fail method of DRM is going to make the new Eagle fail just like any software that had done this before it. \u00a0My prediction is that only companies that can&#8217;t switch to a different software package and software pirates would be using Eagle.<\/p>\n<p>This brings me up to the next point &#8212; switching to a different package. \u00a0I played around with many packages including Altium but that software is out of reach unless you work for a company with deep pockets. \u00a0In the past around 2013, I looked at KiCAD and it was a terrible hodgepodge of many pieces of software bolted together with awkward usage. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t even want to touch it seeing how much work it would be just to even get it going. \u00a0Then I looked at it again last year (2016) and I was surprised how amazing and polished it has become. \u00a0It&#8217;s on the same level as the new Blender and Inkscape software packages.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to give it another shot and see whether it&#8217;s going to be my new EDA program of choice.
